Ocean City Bible Conference

Ocean City Bible Conference

September 9-12, 2012

2012 Theme:

The Church and Contemporary Culture

Join us this September as we spend time studying the Scriptures to better understand Christ's church.
What should the church look like in 2012? What is it supposed to be doing? How should churches change in light of a shifting culture... and what should remain the same?
This year's conference is designed to make us ask important questions about what God wants for His church, and it's designed to drive us to His Word to find the answers to those questions.
We hope you'll join us this fall as we discuss a subject that's important for every member of the body of Christ to consider!

Faith is the Gift of God

Acts 18:27 is the verse the Lord used many years ago to convince me that faith is a gift of God's grace.
"And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:"
If the structure of the last phrase in Acts 18:27 is compared to Eph. 2:8 it should be seen as a "game changer" for any who would deny that faith is the gift of God.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:"
If it is insisted that it is the "salvation" and not the "faith" that is the "gift of God" there, just as it is "by grace", that insistence is silenced by the phrasing of Acts 18:27. That simply will not work in Acts 18:27, and should give sufficient pause to rethink the conclusions usually drawn from Eph. 2:8 on this subject. I would add 2 Pet. 1:1, "
Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:".
On this verse I would direct attention to the treatment of the Greek verb "lanchano" ("to obtain") by Hermann Hanse (1910-1942):

"Even where there is no casting of lots, the attainment is not by one's own effort or a as a result of one's own exertions, but is like ripe fruit falling into one's lap. This is always to be kept in mind." (IV:1)

"In this sentence the point of lanchanein is that faith has come to them from God with no co-operation on their part. That faith is the work, not of man, but of God or Christ, is not stated with equal clarity in all parts of the NT, but it must be constantly borne in mind. It can be seen plainly in Ac. 13:48....God does not merely give to both Jews and Gentiles the possibility of faith; He effects faith in them. Eph. 2:8 makes it especially plain that all is of grace and that human merit is completely ruled out....Faith is not the presupposition of the grace of God. As a divine gift, it is the epitome and demonstration of the grace of God. "Those who have attained to faith" points finally, then, to predestination as a free act of divine grace. Here one is at the very frontiers of theological utterance. All is of grace, and yet God is righteous." (IV:2)

Source: Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, ed. Gerhard Kittel, trans. and ed. Geoffrey W. Bromiley (Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 1967; from Theologishces Worterbuch zum Neuen Testament, Stuttgart: W. Kohlhammer Verlag, n.d.), IV:1-2., s.v. "lanchano".

In a footnote following the first sentence cited from pg. 2 Hanse includes as supporting documentation Bengel (Gnomon of the New Testament), C. Bigg (ICC commentary), and J. B. Mayor (The Epistle of Jude, 1907)

Hanse made reference to Acts 13:48 which should "seal the deal":
"And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed."
Note: Hanse died at a very young age (32) presumably during WWII in Germany. Little else is known about him, but considering where he lived and when, it may be safe to assume that he had "no axe to grind" when it came to Calvinist and Arminian controversies. That should make the strength of his treatment of this verb all the more worthy of consideration by objective students.

Incarnation Day Service moved to Friday

Reminder: There will not be any worship service on "Incarnation Day", December 25th, at Wayside Gospel Chapel to allow families to spend time together. Instead of gathering that day or the night before, we discussed this last Lord's Day and decided to meet on Friday, December 23rd, in the evening instead. We will have a service at 7:00 PM for a Praise, Testimony, and Devotional time followed by deserts and snacks. If any adjustments need to be made to this, or if there are any questions about this service please let me know.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Sermon Series: I Corinthians

The Doctrine of Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15
Part Twelve: The Reasonableness of Resurrection, I-III

1 Corinthians 15:35-49

35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: 37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. 40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. 47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. 49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

Bible Study Pointers:

Studying the Bible profitably, properly, successfully and submissively involves the asking of questions. Ask questions of the text. Look for answers. Ask the right questions! Find the right answers!

1. Comparison: What is there that is common to each paragraph or section (what do they have in common, if anything)?
2. Contrast: What is there that is different in each paragraph or section?
3. Shift: What has changed from one paragraph or section to the next?
4. Development: What development does this change or shift signify?
5. Beginning: Where is the author coming from?
6. End: Where is the author going to?
7. Middle: How is the author getting there?
8. Gist: What is the most important statement(s) or point(s) in the passage?

From the introductory message:

"What does it mean if we do not understand how it is possible? – Verses 35-49
The question restated: Is this doctrine reasonable even if we find ourselves at the frontiers of reason in striving to understand it?"

Outline:

The Possibility of Resurrection Questioned (15:35)
The Questioner of Resurrection Confronted (15:36)
The Reality of Resurrection Explained (15:37-41)
The Nature of Resurrection Connected (15:42-49)

I. The Possibility of Resurrection Questioned (15:35) - Objection

But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?

The nature of the question - "How...?"

The sense of the question - "With what body...?"

II. The Questioner of Resurrection Confronted (15:36) - Exclamation

Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:

Reasoning with the Unreasonable

Ps. 14:1 - The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Science beyond the Scientists

Jn. 12:24 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.

The Philosopher climbing the Mountain in search of Wisdom - the Theologians are already there

What is a Philosopher?
A Blind Man trying to find a Black Cat in a Dark Room who isn't there!

III. The Reality of Resurrection Explained (15:37-41) - Explanation and Foundation

37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

Three Examples:

First Example - Plant Kingdom (Agriculture)

Second Example - Animal Kingdom

Third Example - Solar System (40-41) and beyond - Celestial Bodies

Phil. 2:10 - That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
